We bought a house! A real house!

Okay, I've been MIA, again, but we bought a house!!! After a lifetime of renting we bought our first real house. I started a new blog for anyone who wants to follow along as we renovate this mid-century knock-off to create our modern dream home http://mysocalledeichler.blogspot.com

Our first dilemma is what to paint the kitchen? We are planning to demo and replace with a modern kitchen when budget allows but that will likely be a 3-5 years. Any suggestions? We are painting the main rooms light grey and white. The granite counters are a hot mess of navy blue and muddy white swirl. What's a girl to do?

  1. Congratulations!! Good luck with the transformation! As for the kitchen, that's a challenge. The countertops and floor are an interesting combination ;-)

  3. I would leave the wood because it picks up the wood from the other rooms. alternatively, replace the wood doors with more contemporary fronts. or wait until you decided what do to with the wood in the other room and then pick up that color.

  4. Maybe you could leave some wood and some painted, like the trend where the uppers and bottoms are different colours. Or paint the door fronts but have the cabinets wood?

I would suggest using zinsser 123 or zinsser bin primer and a melamine (latex) paint. I painted my cabinets 5 years ago and they look brand new! Bought it all at Home Depot.

  5. I am VERY HAPPY for you and your family and my CONGRATULATIONS on the purchase of your new home! A very exciting adventure awaits you, however my only advise is to wait and live the space for awhile before you decide on doing anything. I've found that seeing where the light fills the house the most often and where the shadows fall within a room will often determine what color to paint it.
    Have fun! :D

  7. congrats on the new home, i know i was over the moon with my house when i first got it, i should have listened to Medea (diary of a mad black woman) i wound up with no dishwasher and no tub (I wanted a claw foot tub in the bathroom and an apartment sized dishwasher in the kitchen.) when we had space for both if we kept the pedestal sink and moved the fridge over but no i listened to Rich now we have to take showers and wash dishes by hand but thats ok it's been over 12 years and it's time to remodel things again this time i know better so to wrap this up wait a bit until you make drastic changes ( I did wind up painting my kitchen cabinets white and now its time to do it again..this time im thinking a minty green)

  10. CONGRATS! I love your house! Purchasing a new home is always so exciting! I was a military wife for many years and moved around a lot and I loved every new home challenge. You design interiors, so I know it's going to look fabulous! I'll be following along to see what you do. For now, I like the idea of painting upper cabs white and leaving lower cabs wood, updating the hardware, and using some navy accessories.

  15. Just a glimpse of that amazing living area with all those windows, and the soaring ceiling above the kitchen counters shows all the lovely bones are there. Congrats on your new glorious home.

  16. Congratulations on buying your first house and turning it into a home. Renovation projects do tend to be expensive, but paint is one of the ways my husband and I have found to make things look new again without investing too much cash.

If you want a softer look, painting the cabinets a light gray with a hint of blue might do the trick. It will bring out the color in the counters without being overwhelming to the eye.

  17. One of the greatest things about owning a new home is making it your own. I would leave the kitchen cabinets, and get rid of the granite countertops, and replace with something more contemporary. I would also install a bamboo floor in the kitchen. That alone would give a more updated look. As for the paint, choose a color that aligns with pictures or decorations.
